What’s so special about certain words? What makes a word bad? CAN a word be bad?
We have certain words like shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cock sucker, tits, fart, turd, and twat, that can’t be said on TV or radio. These are also words that some people get offended when they hear someone say them. Did looking at any of those words bring up any inner resistance? Why?
The only reason words are bad is because we MAKE them bad.
Do you realize that if you get offended by certain words, if you tell people (namely kids) not to say certain words YOU are making them bad. YOU are making them not okay. Do YOU want the words to continue to be bad?
What is the point of censoring words? Nudity, I can understand—though I don’t agree with it either—but WORDS? C’mon.
When you censor a word it MAKES it bad. It’s like telling kids, don’t say these words, they are bad. But guess what that makes the kid want to do? Say those words.
If you tell a human not do to something, chances are s/he is going to want to do it. It’s just in our nature to resist being controlled by others, especially if you don’t give a good reason not to. And I’m not sure of a good reason not to say a bad word besides offending someone (which is never the reason I hear anyways).
“Don’t touch the fire it will burn you.”
-”Okay, I won’t.”
“Don’t say that word, it’s bad.”
-”Okay I won’t say it when you’re listening.”
I’ve never heard a good description of why “bad” words are bad. The ONLY reason to NOT say certain words is because some people will interpret those noises negatively as if you are personally insulting them. So if you don’t want certain people to feel personally insulted when you say certain words, regardless if you’re even talking to them but especially if their kids are around, don’t say those words. Only say them in private.
But why don’t people define “bad” words like that? If you were to truly say why not to say them, and said what I wrote above, all of sudden the words don’t seem so bad. It’s not that the words are bad, it’s that people perceive them as bad.
I am of the generation that says fuck all the time. It’s not because I want to be rude or lewd, or because I lack vocabulary, it’s because IT’S NOT A BIG DEAL to me. It’s just a word that is extremely interchangeable that adds emphasis to whatever you’re saying.
Now, I try not to be inconsiderate. I understand that some people have chosen to interpret the noise of the air pressure of the consonant f, followed by the vocal chords making an uh, then more air pressure of the consents ck, as poison to their ears. So I try not to say it as much as possible in public places. But, especially if I’m slacklining, they just slip out.
But if you are one of those people who cringe when you hear someone swear, just ask yourself why? Why is it a big deal to you? Why do those certain noises bring you pain? Why are you choosing to get offended?
It’s All About Intention
It makes much more sense to me that phrases be taken more offensively than just words (not that I feel offense should be taken at anything though). For instance, if someone says something with the intention of making another feel bad or angry, I would consider that a bad phrase. But trying to make someone feel bad, whether or not “bad” words are used, is a way worse thing to do than someone just yelling FUCK when they fall off the slackline.
But when someone is not meaning anyone any ill will, what’s so bad about fuck?
Are You More Comfortable with Murder or “Bad” Words?
Most people, I feel it is safe to say, are more comfortable with people committing murder than being around potty mouths. Before you object, let me specify the type of murder.
Most people seem to be perfectly okay with others, and themselves, ending the lives of other living beings, namely bugs. Lots of people seem okay with squashing bugs, but cringe when I say fuck.
By the logic of many, it is okay to kill bugs that are inconveniencing you, but it’s not okay to link up certain sounds in a row without meaning any harm to anyone. Does that make ANY sense?
What makes you cringe more, when people kill bugs or when people make certain sounds? Do you have any problems with people swearing? Why?

Swear words occur in every culture and are always taboo words. And the way the brain stores and processes swear words is different to most other words.
Hey Jack, thanks for the comment. I especially liked this part of the article, “For example, the brains of people who pride themselves on being educated respond to slang and “illiterate” phrases the same way they do to swearwords.”
That just goes to show that it’s all about how we perceive the words.
I give you props for writing a super-catchy headline! That title really grabbed my attention!
Awesome, I’m glad it got your attention! Thanks for the compliment Paula. ^_^
